Hand Arm Vibration
Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome is a condition that affects people who use vibratory equipment such as grinders, sanders, impact wrenches, air chisels etc. “It can cause vibration white finger, a permanent and painful numbness and tingling in the hands and arms, also painful joints and muscle weakening. There is also evidence that it may cause carpel tunnel syndrome.”
The Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005 (the Vibration Regulations) came into force on 6 July 2005 and aims to protect workers from risks to health from vibration.
The regulations introduced an:
- Exposure action value of 2.5m/s2 A(B) at which level employers should introduce technical and organisational measures to reduce exposure.
- Exposure limit value of 5.0m/s2 A(B), which should not be exceeded.
Reducing the risks of vibration exposure:
- Use an alternative method of work that reduces vibration.
- Consider purchasing hand tools that are vibration-reduced.
- Keep hand tools in a good state of repair, ie regularly serviced and maintained.
- Keep consumables in balance, ie, providing training to eliminate bad tool use.
Encourage employees to report early symptoms.
